Mississauga, ON - April 17, 2020 - On March 25th, Emergent notified the Ontario legal community that it was making it's Legal Intake for Wills, a customer facing online wills questionnaire, free for use by all subscribers of Estate Planning & Vault Manager to help combat Covid-19. In the same notice, Emergent also encouraged individuals to sign a petition to update legislation to allow for the virtual witnessing of Wills in Ontario through online video platforms. We are pleased to report our efforts with the movement were successful!
On April 7th, the Ontario Cabinet passed an emergency order to allow virtual witnessing of Wills and POA's. The emergency order can be found here while LSO's statement can be found here.
Emergent would like to thank the legal community for banding together to encourage this legislation be updated. While the Emergency Order only allows for the virtual witnessing of Wills and POA's for the duration of the Covid-10 pandemic, we remain hopeful legislation will be updated to allow technology to play an alternative role to physical witnessing of documents for all practice areas going forward.
We are preparing the inclusion of two additional Affidavits of Execution for our Estate Planning & Vault Manager software; one where two witnesses are in the same location and the other where the witnesses are in different locations. As always, such additional content will be fully merge-able with information from within Estate Planning & Vault Manager.
